Legacy of Speech

by Li Yew

According to the Oxford dictionary, “Legacy is an amount of money or property left to someone in a will.” But legacy is not only limited to material possessions. it could be as simple as our speech, that is able to bring forth impact into someone’s life.

Genesis tells us that the whole universe and every living creature in it were formed as a result of what God spoke. His words are so powerful! Throughout the bible, we observe that His words not only created life, but conversations with the Lord inspired creativity and birth new ideas. Since we are created in His image, our speech too carries the same power. The words we release bring forth authority and power, to heal or destroy. Have you ever noticed how a simple compliment can make your day? Or a negative comment ruins the entire week? The words we speak can produce life or death (Proverbs 18:21).

We are living in a society full of criticism, complaints, and faultfinders. But, we carry the torch, to be different in our speech as we inherit who God is in us. Imagine what would happen if, in the midst of criticisms, we release blessings; in situations of various complaints, we give thanks?

Try these in your daily life: a late delivery from Grab Food - why not appreciate the driver for his effort? When someone does or says something that makes you feel bad about yourself, choose to speak the truth in love instead of ranting about it on social media. Let’s choose to use our words to brighten up  someone’s day.  Let’s choose to leave a legacy in other people’s lives, with the words we speak.

Application

Take some time to reflect on your speech. Does your speech encourage others and build people up? Let’s choose to tune our mind to God and speak encouraging words intentionally.

Come to God and ask Him to reveal to you the person that needs words or encouragement today and ask Him for the words that He wants to release over that person. Send him or her the words you receive using whichever means that are suitable (whatsapp, instagram, facebook, telegram etc.). Bear in mind that these words are meant for edification, encouragement or comfort.
